Crazy like a box: 2009 Scion xD

by Barclay Nelson

Scion is a division of Toyota that makes fun inexpensive cars for urban youth or just the youthful.  Scions have really creative designs and just-the-basics interiors.  There’s a community of Scion owners that accessorize their Scions with all kinds of Tokyo drift paint jobs and accessories.  And there’s many that love their Scions just as they are.  The Scion experience is meant to be simple all around, from simple online or in showroom build outs to no haggle pricing.

I put the xD in the urban wagonette category because it is a four door hatchback with folding rear seats. The xD culture and driver base put emphasis the urban hip aspects of the urban wagonette.  You can get an xD starting at $15,320, no that’s not a typo.  Gas mileage is good at 26/32 or a little better with the manual transmission.  You’ll pay $800 for and automatic transmission. I don’t think I really need to say anything about the engine, it’s well suited and has enough horsepower to do the job.  As far as standard features go, it has standard Ipod connectivity and steering wheel volume controls unlike many cars that are much more expensive.

Other interesting standard features are:

  • Power outside mirrors with turn signals on them
  • Steering wheel volume controls
  • Drive monitor with trip meter and average fuel consumption
  • One touch power windows
  • 2 glove boxes

There are lots of funky cosmetic options like the blue-neon-ish interior illumination or the OBX shift knob and sport pedals.  You can even get the TRD lowering springs which gives you more of a low profile, low rider gangsta look. Some other optional features to consider include:

  • Pioneer premium audio upgrade
  • Navigation
  • Satellite radio
  • Rear spoiler

Toyota/Scion is good about safety.  The xD gets 5 star ratings side and frontal collisions.

Safety features include:

  • Front, side and side curtain airbags for front driver and passenger
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Optional: alarm
  • Optional: vehicle stability control
  • Optional: wheel locks

The interior is techno-simple, with 5 cup holders.  It might get a little cramped in back if the front passengers have their seats all the way back but otherwise is fine.  The back seats fold down easily for a bunch of hauling space.  The exterior is hip and boxy, but not as boxy as its sibling the xB.  The box is cool now though, right.  There are a lots of little box designs on the road right now but Scion was ahead of the curve on the box.

Don’t overlook the character of this car, it has it.  Besides all it’s character, it’s hard to find a versatile reliable well-rounded (oxymoron, get it, well-rounded/box) car at this price point.  It’s solid, it’s a box and it’s a little crazy.    For more information visit http://www.scion.com/#xD_overview.
